Hybrid Timber Building in Göttingen built with Peikko’s DELTABEAM®

Slim floors with large spans: This is made possible by Peikko's DELTABEAM® composite beams in the new research and development building on the Sartorius campus in Göttingen, Germany.

The slabs of the five-floor complex are built as a timber hybrid structure. Here, Peikko's composite beams are used in combination with timber-concrete composite slabs. The slim construction has a high load-bearing capacity due to the composite approach. The slabs could thus be executed everywhere without interfering with downstand beams.

The new research and development building at Sartorius Campus in Göttingen will provide space for a technology center, laboratories, and offices. The 21-meter-high building complex is being realized according to the plans of Bünemann & Collegen Architects, who have also been commissioned with the master plan of the campus. The new research and development building has a total of four upper floors and a basement.

The project construction specialist Brüninghoff was responsible for the construction of the shell and load-bearing structure. The basement and access areas housing staircases and elevator shafts were built as reinforced concrete structures.

Strong duet: DELTABEAM® combined with timber-concrete composite slabs

The rest of the complex was realized in timber hybrid construction. The primary structure consists of timber-concrete composite slabs (TCC) in combination with DELTABEAM® composite beams from Peikko.

The latter are connected to the slab almost flush with the bottom edge, this ensures a particularly slim structure and enables a reduced height of the building structure. At the same time, considerable material savings are achieved for the facade cladding.

In addition, a smaller envelope area results in lower energy consumption - and this over the entire service life of the building. DELTABEAM® D35-400 central beams were mainly used, and it was possible to completely dispense with beams in the interior. Furthermore, DELTABEAM® edge beams with a narrower cross-section provide a clean finish towards the atrium.

A total of 2.2 kilometers of DELTABEAM® were used in this project.

Peikko's DELTABEAM® composite beams were combined with TCC slabs. Recesses in the timber slabs were used as a bonding agent between wood and concrete. The high degree of prefabrication of the construction elements contributed to the fast assembly of the components on site in Göttingen.

Timber columns

The columns were also delivered to the construction site ready for installation. Since the first and second floor are subject to high loads, beech columns were used in these areas. The material has a particularly high load-bearing capacity. In the remaining floors, they are made of glued laminated timber (glulam).

Sustainable structure

Peikko's DELTABEAM® contributes to sustainable architecture. The flat structure of the load-bearing structure not only enables material and energy savings, but also architectural freedom. The assembly of the individual elements was carried out quickly on site. The research and development building aims for platinum certification from the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB).
