A compact, functionally well thought-out roof extension was built at Pillergasse 24 in Vienna's 15th district on behalf of the Vienna Workers' Samaritan Federation. Following the complete demolition of the existing roof storey, a three-storey structure was realised that blends in sensitively with the existing building fabric and meets modern requirements for office and event use.
The new structure comprises two full storeys and a recessed top floor with a terrace in front. On the courtyard side, balconies and terraces complement the outdoor areas and also improve the lighting situation. An external staircase provides independent access to the roof terrace, allowing flexible use of the upper levels.
The lower floors are used as office space and for seminars, while the top floor with its spacious terrace is reserved for events and lectures. This clear functional separation creates structure and allows for versatile use.
The planning by wafler architektur follows the principles of contemporary, sustainable architecture: functional clarity, efficient use of space and a high quality of stay are at the forefront. Particular attention is paid to urban integration, the neighbourhood and natural lighting.
A key element is the supporting structure with DELTABEAM® Slim-Floor Beams from Peikko. The beam-free design allows a reduced construction height and opens up space solutions with large spans - a clear advantage in an urban context. The Slim-Floor technology also supports an economical construction method and fulfils high fire protection requirements. ATLANT® Strong Composite Columns were used as a design element not only in the roof extension, but also in the entrance area, elegantly connecting the old and new parts of the building.
The new structure creates a forward-looking place for working and meeting - functional, sustainable and architecturally precisely anchored in the urban fabric.
